Major General Wesley E. Craig

Retired Major General Wesley E. Craig was the Commanding General, 28th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Pennsylvania Army National Guard.  He was promoted to his current rank and appointed to this position in October 2003.  In this position, he commanded a National Guard mechanized infantry division, consisting of seven major subordinate commands and 25 battalions, all stationed in 95 communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia.

General Craig was born in Philadelphia, PA, Sept. 13, 1946.  He graduated from Cheltenham High School in June 1964 and Temple University in 1968 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

General Craig was commissioned as a distinguished military graduate from Temple's Army ROTC program immediately after graduation.  He served two years on active duty assigned to the Transportation Corps in Fort Stewart, GA, from 1968 to 1970.

 

General Craig joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in January 1971.  He served as the squadron motor officer to the 28th Infantry Division's Armored Cavalry Squadron. 

He transferred to Armor and held various positions with the 104th Cavalry including intelligence officer, operations and training officer, logistics officer and executive officer.  With reorganization of the squadron in 1987, he transferred to Headquarters, 213th Area Support Group, where he was assigned as the director of personnel and administration.  He returned to the 1st Squadron, 104th Cavalry as its commanding officer from February 1988 until January 1992.  He was then assigned to the 56th Brigade as executive officer in January 1992 and assumed command of this brigade in January 1996.  While he was in command, the 56th Brigade was awarded the Governor’s Meritorious Unit Citation.  The 56th Brigade has been selected as the Army Guard’s first Stryker Brigade Combat Team as recognition of its numerous strengths.  General Craig was transferred to Headquarters, 28th Infantry Division, and assigned as the Deputy Commanding General (Support) in December 2000.

In February 2002, General Craig was recalled to active duty to serve as Deputy Commanding General for both Maneuver and Support.

General Craig is a graduate of the Transportation Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advance Course, Junior Officer Maintenance Course, Intelligence Officer Qualification Course, Military Personnel Officer Course, Command and General Staff Officers Course and Defense Strategy Course.  He is a 1993 graduate of the U.S. Army War College.

General Craig’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Pennsylvania Distinguished Service Medal and the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal with Silver Star. 

General Craig is married to the former Marda Phelps.  They reside in Annville, PA.  They have two children, son, Matt, and daughter, Joy.
