Colonel E. Thomas Kuhn

Colonel E. Thomas Kuhn is commander of the 193rd Special Operations Wing, Pennsylvania Air National Guard, located at the Harrisburg International Airport, Middletown, Pa.  The 193rd is the only Air National Guard unit in the elite United States Air Force Special Operations Command. Col. Kuhn graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1968 with a degree in landscape architecture and received a master’s degree in regional planning from Penn State in 1972.  He attended navigator training at Mather Air Force Base, Calif., in 1968; and pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, in 1972.  Col. Kuhn is a command pilot with more than 4,800 total hours.

In 1970, Col. Kuhn deployed with his unit to Southeast Asia, flying in “Operation Coronet Cobra/Commando Buzz” from Korat
Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand.  In 1983, Col. Kuhn was appointed chief of operational plans and began full-time employment with the then 193rd Special Operations Group.  Col. Kuhn was a member of the “Class of ’88” at the United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.  Upon graduation, he was appointed as deputy commander for support of the 193rd SOG.  During “Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm,” Col. Kuhn was responsible for the combat support of the 193rd SOG, which was deployed to two locations within the Persian Gulf theater of operations.

Col. Kuhn was appointed as the first vice-commander of the 193rd Special Operations Wing in January 1993 and assumed command of the wing in November 1996.  In recent years, Col. Kuhn has deployed with his unit for “Operation Sea Signal/Uphold Democracy” in support of U.S. operations in Haiti; “Operation Joint Guard” in support of the NATO Stabilization Force in Bosnia; to Kuwait in support of “Operation Desert Thunder,” and most recently during the NATO-led “Operation Allied Force.”

Among his military awards are the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with V device and eight oak leaf clusters, and Aircrew Combat Readiness Medal with four oak leaf clusters.  He also has been awarded the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal.

Col. Kuhn is married to the former Kathleen Atkinson of New Castle, Pa.  They have two children, Mary Kay and Tommy. Col.
Kuhn is active in a number of community and state organizations.  He is the past president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter
of the American Planning Association and past chairman of the Professional Development Committee of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Certified Planners.  He is currently a member of the executive board of the Pennsylvania National Guard Associations.  He is a past president and present treasurer of the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church.  Colonel Kuhn is a member of both VFW #7530 in Lower Allen Township and American Legion Post #93 in Camp Hill, Pa.
